As a Man Thinketh

Disease and health, like circumstances, are rooted in thought. Sickly thoughts will express themselves through a sickly body. Thoughts of fear have been known to kill a man as speedily as a bullet, and they are continually killing thousands of people just as surely, though less rapidly. The people who live in fear of disease are the people who get it. Anxiety quickly demoralizes the whole body and lays it open to the entrance of disease, while impure thoughts, even if not physically indulged, will sooner shatter the nervous system.

With the success of THE SECRET, some of the older "positive thinking" gurus are being dusted off and reissued. Allen wrote on the vanguard of the movement, which was facilitated by the marginalization of Protestantism's doctrine of original sin by some Christian leaders in the 1950s. Charley Steiner's brusque, deep voice seems hurried, perhaps due to time restrictions concerning the capture of the entire book on a single CD. He is unconvincing as he delivers the name-it-and-claim-it platitudes that will be repetitive to those who are familiar with them and cloying to those who are not. He has a tendency to fire the bromides rapidly, barely allowing the each one to make its impression before restating it. S.M.M. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine
