"Everything epic fantasy should be: rich, cruel, gorgeous, brilliant, enthralling and deeply, deeply satisfying. I loved it."—Lev Grossman, author of The Magicians
Jenn Lyons begins the Chorus of Dragons series with The Ruin of Kings, an epic fantasy audiobook about a man who discovers his fate is tied to the future of an empire.

When destiny calls, there's no fighting back.
Kihrin grew up in the slums of Quur, a thief and a minstrel's son raised on tales of long-lost princes and magnificent quests. When he is claimed against his will as the missing son of a treasonous prince, Kihrin finds himself at the mercy of his new family's ruthless power plays and political ambitions.
Practically a prisoner, Kihrin discovers that being a long-lost prince is nothing like what the storybooks promised. The storybooks have lied about a lot of other things, too: dragons, demons, gods, prophecies, and how the hero always wins.
Then again, maybe he isn't the hero after all. For Kihrin is not destined to save the world.
He's destined to destroy it.

A trio of talented narrators tackles the first book in a new fantasy series centered on a man who is destined to destroy an empire. The novel is framed as a story within a story in which Kihrin, portrayed by Vikas Adam, tells his tale to his female captor, a shape-shifting and deadly assassin, portrayed by Soneela Nankani, as she recounts the events leading up to his capture. A third narrator, Feodor Chin, interjects humorous asides. Adam and Nankani capably imbue their characters with depth, but Chin is overshadowed by their vocal range. Nonetheless, the trio complement each other and elevate an unconventional story filled with intense world-building and vivid characters. J.M.M. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine

The first chapter of The Ruin of Kings begins as Kihrin waits in a prison cell to be sacrificed to a demon. As he waits he is forced to tell his story to Talon, his demon jailer. Talon is beautiful but her appearance belies her true self. She will, in turn, tell his story through her eyes and from memories that she has stolen from him. Raised by a brothel madam, Ola, and a skilled performer, Surdyeh, 15-year-old Kihrin taught himself music but also how to be a successful thief. Maybe too successful, because one night he witnessed something he should not: a mysterious wizard raising a powerful demon prince. As Kihrin is thrown into a journey beyond his control he struggles to know who to trust in a world of switched souls and shapeshifters. No-one is who they seem. Armed with only the Stone of Shackles for protection, Kihrin faces a fate worse than death by the hands of Teraeth and Khaemezra, members of the Black Brotherhood, a mysterious group of assassins. From living as an orphan in the slums of the Lower Circle he will be claimed as a long lost prince of one of the most powerful and ruthless families in the Empire. From thief to prince to slave, Kihrin is a likeable rouge; sarcastic, brave and feisty. Jenn Lyons is an exciting new voice in the fantasy genre. She has created a complex new world with an intriguing mix of ambition, violence and legends. The Ruin of Kings tackles legends of old – dragons, wizards, immortals and gods. The Ruin of Kings is the first in the ‘Chorus of Dragons’ series and I can’t wait for the next book.  Reviewed by Joanne Brewer
