O.P. Anderson Celebrates 135 Years •  with Spice Master Jonas Odland’s Final Blend

TASTED JULY – SEPTEMBER • Here is a selection of spirits and beers tasted by the editorial team from July to September.

Guinness – Behind the Scenes of Ireland’s Timeless Stout • Given that 1.8 million people visit the Guinness Storehouse at St. James’s Gate in Dublin each year – a museum and visitor centre that was once part of the brewery – I count myself a little lucky to book a tour at short notice on a Saturday morning in March. Full of anticipation, I step into the historic brick building and find seven floors packed with brewing history, tastings and interactive exhibitions. The crowning glory is surely the rooftop bar, with its 360-degree panoramic views, where I exchange the voucher included in my ticket for a fresh pint of Guinness and gaze out across Dublin’s rooftops.

Q&A: Padraig Fox, Global Brand Ambassador for Guinness

Old Pulteney – 200 Years of Craftsmanship and Salty Sea Breezes • Almost as far north as you can go on the Scottish mainland, just south of Orkney, lies the old fishing town of Wick, whose name derives from the Old Norse word vik, meaning bay. In the heart of the town, with the North Sea as its backdrop, Old Pulteney stands testament to a venerable whisky tradition. To mark the distillery’s 200th anniversary, I spent a whole day travelling by train and taxi to meet distillery manager Malcolm Waring and master of whisky creation Sarah Burgess, and to taste, among other things, Old Pulteney’s 30- and 50-year-old anniversary bottlings.

Holladay Distillery • Holladay Distillery was founded as early as 1856 by Ben “The Stagecoach King” Holladay, with the able assistance of his brother David. This makes Holladay Missouri’s oldest distillery—and also the oldest distillery west of the Mississippi that is still in operation at its original location. That alone, of course, holds enough American whiskey history to make the glasses clink with anticipation. And the location was hardly chosen by chance. Active limestone springs run beneath the distillery, and their water became a vital part of the operation. These are the same springs that were mapped as early as 1804 during Lewis and Clark’s famous expedition westward—a piece of American history that was thus already on the map long before the first drop of whiskey flowed from Holladay’s stills.

Whiskey & Bourbon Tastings Holladay Single Cask, aged 6 to 6.5 years • The “Real Missouri Bourbon” classification stems from a 2019 law requiring that all whiskey labeled as Missouri bourbon must not only meet federal bourbon standards but also be mashed, fermented, distilled, aged in oak barrels made in the state, and bottled in the state.

Pearse Lyons Distillery – whiskey on sacred ground • It’s hard to imagine a more unusual location for a whiskey distillery. In the heart of Dublin’s historic Liberties neighborhood and next door to Guinness, the decommissioned 19th-century St. James’ Church—along with its cemetery—has been transformed into a distillery named after its founder, Pearse Lyons. One afternoon in March, production manager Conor Ryan showed me around the former church. He explained what makes their whiskey unique—from the grain they grow themselves to a yeast strain that no one else uses.

Tamnavulin 60 Years – from an unknown brand to Sweden’s best-selling single malt • When I’m asked if I’d like to join in celebrating Tamnavulin’s 60th anniversary at a hotel in Richmond, London, one afternoon in June, I don’t hesitate for a...
